Clinical case?!

Question:

Clinical case?

what is the mechanism of action of lidocaine as a local anesthetic agent for ingrown toenail?

Answers:

Lidocaine (xylocaine) is a general use amine anesthetic and acts via altering nerve conduction/re-polarization through blocking a sodium pump mechanism, required for normal electrical activity. Although a 1% preparation (cream or jelly) is absorbed some what through broken skin or mucouse membrane, it is absorbed poorley, if at all, through intact skin.
It would be most effective, on an ingrown nail, then, if the skin is broken. Of course, it is often used in an injectable form to cut back the nail.
Hope that You arer feeling better: keep that nail (foot?) elevated !
