Question: Does an instrument technician in a hospital setting have to disinfect soiled linen!?
Thinking of doing Cert III in sterilisation services!. Any advice!? I just want to clean instruments!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This all will go to the laundry rooms!.
Disassembles, decontaminates, cleans and reassembles medical,surgical and patient care supplies, including surgical instruments according to established procedures!.

Assembles utensil sets, single package instruments, sterile container's, and trays for sterilization!.

Sorts, linens,assembles, and wraps linen packs dressings, utensils, and surgical instruments set for sterilization!.

Operates steam and gas sterilizers , autoclaves and other sterilization cleaning and reprocessing equipment!.

Takes inventories of clinic or ward supplies, checks for out dated trays, and returns for re processing again if need be!.

Picks up and returns supplies to service areas, collects used items and returns to processing areas!.

Fills emergency requests and suggest possible subs to medical and nursing staff in case the item is out of stock!. Receives supplies!.

Prepare anesthesia workrooms prepare anesthesia equipment in surgical suites ready for use when needed!.

Checks operation of suctioning machines, respirators and surgical equipment!.

May orientate new staff and train them!.

One year experience as a CST or 1 year experience cleaning, assembling, packaging and sterilizing medical surgical and nursing supplies, instruments and equipment!. A completion of a central service in a technician course in a school or collage Class 3!.

No!. That goes off to the Central Linen Department!.

Certificate 111 in Sterilisation will allow you to work in CSSD or CSD!.

You have to clean instruments!.
Sort them by what they are!. And group them if needed!. Like Biopsy Kits!.
Seal them in the long sterilising bags!. That's the hard bit as they tend to fall out!
Stamp and lable them!.
Sterilise them!.
Take them out and check all items!.
Sign them off!.

Of course there are lot's of other things to do in this department but this is the main task!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
