How has your life while having diabetes been made easier my technology?!

Question: How has your life while having diabetes been made easier my technology!?
In what ways have the ease of use, size of meter, smart meters, and alternate site testing helped accommodate your needs as a diabetic!?!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
the invention of personal meters has definately improved the lives of most diabetics as they can now test more often, at any location they are at, and more accurately (the urine strips only gave a range of how much sugar was in the urine, not how much was currently in the bloodstream)!. It has resulted in fewer hospitalizations for many!.

Smaller meters have eliminated some of the hassels of carrying the meter with you (many of the first meters were too large to fit into your pocket or small handbag)!. Multitest discs have helped with the hassel of carrying around all your strips, and having to load them in the wind or rain (or leaving them in the hot car and having to buy new strips)!. I haven't found much of a difference personally in the change from 10 seconds to 5 for results, or alternate testing sites!.

Preloaded insulin pens are nice, since I don't have to carry around and refridgerate the whole vial everywhere I go (some offices wouldn't let me bring prefilled syringes, but I could bring the vial and empty syringes - dumb rule)!. I can keep one pen at home and one at work (which, unless someone really looks at my collection of pens, they don't necessarily know one of them isn't for writing)!.

Continuous monitoring and insulin pumps are making things even easier, especially as they get smaller and less noticeable!. Even better will be when they can inject without needles (I hear they're working on models that will be able to do that - nice)!.

Meters that can now do 14 and 30 day averaging, meal averaging, and can be downloaded into special computer programs for print outs and graphs are really nice!. It allows you to see your personal picture of diabetes (something we couldn't do 20 years ago)!. I read that some meters can even upload wirerlessly to the doctor's office now!.

Really cool for kids are the meters in neat colors and interchangable covers (like cell phones are) so they look and feel less "medical" and can be personalized to suit the kid!. Wouldn't it be fun to have ringtone type capability for low, high, and in target readings!?

Talking meters have helped many who are visually impaired!. I wish my meter had a backlight so I can test better in darkened rooms or in the car at night without having to turn on a light!. I'd like an alarm capability to remind me to check my midafternoon readings (right now I use the alarm on my cell phone)!.

Cheaper meters and strips have helped a lot with expenses, and have allowed me to have two backup meters (a second one at home in case I question the accuracy of the first meter, and a second one at work in case I forget to bring my meter with me or loose it)!.

I'd be nice to see meters with preprogramed food lists and carb/insulin ratio so diabetics could select Big Mac and fries and the meter would tell you how much insulin you need to cover it!. It would take the guess work out of it for many who aren't comfortable trying to figure it out!.

YOUR techology!?!? Testing is quicker with the new meters!. I have tried many of them, and keep going back to my one touch ultra!. I have about 6 different models Alternate sites I do not like!. I have tested in my arm and then my finger and get much different results!. The finger is much more accurate!. I personally like using the finger sites!. Smart meters are not as smart as they are advertised!. Not having to code means nothing to me, I don't mind coding, it only takes a few seconds!. I am in love with my one touch ultra!. I test 8 times every day, more if I am sick!. I do like the fact that the monitors have gotten smaller than they were when I was first diagnosed!. Now, if one of these newer meters could actually cure my disease, I would buy it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
