If you're referring to someone you are dating, it is best to arm yourself with the facts so you can present him/her with information and dispel any myths (and there are a lot of myths out there!). Hopefully, if the person truly cares about you, they will listen to you and then find out more about it themselves.
If you're talking about friends or co-workers, you should do the same thing. Educate yourself so you can assure them it is not contagious from casual contact. I told my co-workers when I was about to start the chemo-like treatment for hep c, thinking that I may need their support on bad days. They were supportive and understanding when I didn't have much energy. It helped a lot. I think you're doing the right thing. You'll find out who your real friends are. Best wishes to you.
