BESIDES cancer. I'm writing a story and I'm trying to mix it up a bit, so I need something that isn't insanely common (and no, I'm interested in different TYPES of cancer).

Disseminated Sporotrichosis is a particularly unpleasant release from life.
In Latin America a simple wound may produce an mycetoma of draining sinuses, destruction of bone, oozing malodorous mess of mixed fungus infection with bacterial infection.
When the fungus Sporotrichosis becomes part of this picture, it may cause spread by the blood stream to organs, bones, brain, skin, lungs and this disseminated disease kills the person slowly as the classic Tropical Medicine Text example photo (long before HIV existed) showing a man's face sagging and disintegrating from the bone.
That is a very long terrible way to go.
I tried to find the old tropical medicine text photo for you but did not come across it.
