Question about Kidney transplant.?!

Question: Question about Kidney transplant!.!?
My uncle is suffering from kidney problems!. It's been a month since he started his dialysis treatment!. His body keeps going weak because he can't eat very much because of the dialysis (he has noo taste too foods, and lots of prohibited foods)!. Also, his hemoglobin count keeps going down, making him anemic!. I heard that kidney transplant is a very good solution for those people who has that kind of problem!. I just want to ask if he can get that as soon as his body became stronger even though he has diabetes!? Because right now, me and my family is sure that we still can't have that transplant becasue we still need to find donor and wait for my uncle's body to get stronger!. I just want to know if it's possible for him to have a transplant even with diabetes problems!. Please help! Thank you so much!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
A person on dialysis needs a different diet than someone who is in earlier stages of kidney failure but not on dialysis yet and different than someone on a transplant!.

On dialysis a person is usually anemic and sometimes needs to be on iron pills, get IV Iron at times, and put on something like Epo, Eprex, or the like or an alternative that I am on called Aranesp!. These help raise hemoglobin by adding something the kidneys normally produce to tell the bonemarrow to produce more red blood cells which carry oxygen to the muscles so he will have more energy!.

Also a person on dialysis tends to have low protein especially if on Hemo dialysis so he should eat more protein (speak to the renal dietitian as everyone is different and I can't know for sure if his is low) to get his strength back (muscle)!.

Also uremia is very common for dialysis patients and the better the dialysis the better he will feel!.

If it is 3 times a week for 4 hrs each time !.!. that is not as good as nightly dialysis or daily dialysis which is usually done at home but still not available in all areas even though more and more places are getting training and the equipment for it!.

Also are they sure what his dry weight is!? Is he keeping under his fluid limits (dialysis patients can't drink a lot !.!. ESPECIALLY if they no longer pee! Where else is it going to go!? Not into thin air but into the blood and tissues! The when it is in the tissues that is a LOT harder for any dialysis machine to take out than it is from out of the blood)!.

Also there are more than one type of dialysis!. Is he on Hemo Dialysis or Peritoneal Dialysis!? Diet is not as restricted on PD but because it uses more Dextrose it isn't always a good idea for diabetics!.

A Kidney transplant is a great idea but the medications afterwards can cause glucose levels to go up higher again so he would have to discuss this with his transplant team!. Also is it possible for him to get a kidney and pancreas transplant!? That way he would not be diabetic anymore!

The more you and your uncle learn, the better prepared you guys are for the future!

For a Kidney Transplant there are certain requirements to be met ahead of time !.!. might seem dumb but there are very important reasons!. One of them is his weight!. Because the medication after transplant and the fluid retention that can happen at first will be harder on his heart the heavier he is!. A lot of diabetics on dialysis are told to lose a certian amount of weight before they will be allowed to get on the trasnplant list!.

I have gotten a kidney transplant from a cadaver donor!. Which means he signed his donor card and talked to his family about it!. When he died he didn't take his kidney with him!. This doesn't effect futural arrangements and he lives on in me and I have my life back because of him!.

So if your uncle can't find a donor don't worry too much!. Keep looking but also know he can always "get the call" once on the list!.

Also another site that is great for looking for altruistic donors (they do not want money as that is illegal in the USA) and also has loads of information on living donors and the requirements to donate, is a site called http://www!.livingdonorsonline!.orgWww@Answer-Health@Com

A large percentage of those who undergo kidney transplants do so because of kidney damage secondary to diabetes, so having this condition will not preclude your uncle from having a transplant!.

A major obstacle to your uncle getting a transplant is the fact that many people are waiting for a transplant, and not enough people are willing to be organ donors!. I sincerely hope a donor kidney will become available for your uncle!.

Every year, thousands of people die waiting for an organ transplant!. Organ donation is a wonderful way to help others live after we die!. For more information, check out www!.OrganDonor!.gov

They were doing transplants of the kidney 30 years ago on diabetic patients--so I am thinking it is still done today!. Good Luck to him!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It depends on what type of diabetes he has, Type I or Type 2, his dr will be able to tell him if he's eligible to be put on the donor waiting list!. Once on the list, it could be almost immediately that a perfect match comes for him, or it could be a very long time, there are a lot of factors involved with organ transplants!. My Dad had a kidney transplant when I was a teenager, he was on dialysis for 3 years before a kidney was available!. He lived for 10 more years with the new kidney, but he was sick all the time, mostly because he wasn't in the best health by the time a new kidney was available and he was 50!. Younger, healthier people can do really well with a new organ!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
