Do you get cold sores/ herpes from another person or can you just wake up at have it?

if you have kissed someone with a cold sore, then chances are you will catch them. i dont think u just wake up with them...but you can also get them from sharing lip care with someone infected, or drinking after someone as well. Herpes is passed by either oral sex (with a person infected with cold sores) or someone who has gental herpes.
