Muscle Pain or Weakness blood clotting.?!

Question:

Muscle Pain or Weakness blood clotting.?

"Tell your doctor if your experiencing unexplained muscle pain or weakness because it may be a sign of a rare but serious side effect."

That is the phrase I hear all the time from commercials, I have noticed that a relative is having these and I want to do some research...My question is what type of condition or illness are they talking about in the blood pressure medications commercials like Plavix.

Answers:

The rare, but serious, problem is rhabdomyolysis.

It is more commonly associated with statin drugs, which are cholesterol lowering medications - though, it is still very rare with these.

Plavix is a blood thinner, not a blood pressure medication, and is more associated with bleeding problems.

You can read more about rhabdo here:

Your relative ought to see a doctor and see if any of the drugs they are on cause this...and should also get some basic lab work to check for common electrolyte abnormalities (such as low potassium) that can cause muscle pains, as well...and is much more common.

Hope this helps!
