Hello,
In the days before the live Cowpox virus (used by Jenner), and later the live Vaccinia virus, were used to immunize against Smallpox, - - people sometimes preferred to get their attack of Smallpox out of the way at a convenient time, instead of when they caught it from someone else!.
If you scratch someone's arm with the Variola (i!.e!. with the Smallpox) virus, they will get real Smallpox!. You could call this procedure 'variolation,' after the proper name of the Smallpox virus, Variola!.
I should add that Smallpox is now deemed to be eradicated from the world, and the only live Variola viruses now known, are held in deep-freeze in the "High-Security" Government Laboratories of the main superpowers!. However, Variola is known to have escaped once from its captivity, killing a woman on an upper floor who was not immune to Smallpox, via the air-conditioning ducts!. The Director of the Institute concerned subsequently committed suicide!.
