Question: Is my fasting blood glucose of 110 too high!?
I haven't been diagnosed with diabetes or anything like that!. My doctor wants to do a Hemoglobin a1c test to check it further!. I thought 110 was normal!? How likely is it that I have diabetes from a reading like this!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, the American Diabetes Association's standards say that anything between 100-125 is pre-diabetic!. You won't be diagnosed with diabetes at 110, but you're not in the normal range either!.
You will see numerous answers on this message board that claim a fasting blood test of 110 is normal!. I believe that this is because the ADA itself changed its standards recently, so many people are still going by the old standard!.
I understand that the reason for the stricter standards is so that pre-diabetes can be identified more quickly!. Early intervention can and does prevent the progression to full diabetes!. Your doctor or nutritionist should be talking to you about modifying your diet, exercising more, and losing weight!. Try on the South Beach phase 2 food plan!. Don't fight the doctor on diagnosis of diabetes!. Pre diabetes diagnosis doesn't get you the test strips discount from your insurance company and they can be rather expensive at $1/strip and up!.
HbA1c is the percentage of glucose molecules clinging to the red blood cells for the past 90 to 120 days, which is how long the red blood cells live!. 5 is absolutely normal!. over that is how much too much sugar you have floating in your blood!. Could be a little and could be a lot!.
70 to 100 is actually normal!. 100 to 125 is prediabetes and over 126 is diabetes!. This is contrary to what most on here say, but is what the doctors look at!. Most meters tell you HI when it is over 600! This is not a nice greeting at all!.
