Pimple on lip or cold sore?!

Question:

Pimple on lip or cold sore?

I have a small red dot on my upper lip. It seems I keep getting one every month or so. They usually are sore and sort of tender, and take about two weeks/a week to go away if I use clearasil. The thing is, I don't know if It's a cold sore because it doesn't break and scab like a cold sore is supposed to, but it doesn't develop a white head like a pimple. Any thoughts?

Answers:

It does sound like a cold sore, but it is possible it is a pimple. Cold sores do not follow the guidelines that you often read about on the net. They seem to make up their own rules for each person they infect!

If it is a cold sore, don't stress it too much. Most people eventually end up with herpes type 1 at some point. To be sure, you can have your doctor culture it. If it is positive you may choose to take antivirals such as Valtrex to stop them from showing up. No one likes to deal with cold sores whether they are on your face or your genitals!

If it is a cold sore, clearasil will not help it heal faster. Try a medication made for cold sores to speed up the healing. 2 weeks every month or so is way too frequent to have to deal with that.

Until you know for sure, avoid touching your lip to anyone else or sharing anything that has touched your lip when the sore is present!

Good luck!
