Question:

If someone is a hard core drug addict--addicted to Xanax--taking up to 10 bars a day,?

when they go into rehab, do they stop taking them cold turkey? My sister finally went into rehab for her addiction and I have been reading up on Xanax..and it says that you cannot just stop taking it or she could have seizures, or even death. I am scared for her. I don't know how rehab works.

Answers:

No, they do not stop taking them cold turkey.
Xanax is a benzodiazepine, and people with even mild addictions are weaned off slowly.
Rehab programs closely monitor for any withdrawal symptoms and change the rate and amount of the wean appropriately (and even give other medications to minimize the withdrawal symptoms).
You have nothing to worry about, especially since you sister is in rehab. If she wasn't in rehab, but tried to go off the medications by herself...then there would be reason to worry.
However, rehab programs closely monitor and wean patients in a very safe manner.

Hope this helps!

I am glad your sister finally got help.
