Question: Opinions please on the cervical cancer vaccination please!.!?
To have or not to have, that is the queston!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have an 11 year old daughter so I asked my gynecologist about her getting the shots this year!. I also work in health care, so I asked two of the docs that I work with!.

They all recommended not getting my daughter the vaccination!. Here's why - There are about 100 strains of the HPV virus and several of those are of the type that can lead to cervical cancer!. The vaccination (Gardasil) only covers for 4 different HPV virus strains!.

Also, only girls/women are eligible for the vaccinations, so that means that boys/men are still passing along those other strains that aren't covered by Gardasil!.

So basically, you are only protecting yourself against 4 strains out of about 100!. Some insurances cover the injections and some do not!. For the three injections (where I live) it's around $350!. The physicians I talked to seem to think it's just another money maker for Merck (the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Gardasil)

I'm not against the vaccine, but I think women who get it should be aware that they can still get cervical cancer from HPV!. Getting a Pap smear every year is the best way to prevent cervical cancer or to catch it early!.

Rhianna: You have just restated my point!. There are many, many strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer!. Gardasil gives only 70% protection (not 100%) against 4 strains of the nearly 100 that are out there!.

Women and girls who get this vaccine are under the impression that they are 100% protected against cervical cancer!. That is simply not the case!.

Like I said above, I'm not against the vaccine!. And I'm certainly not comparing to the MMR vaccination because I have no problem with that vaccination!. You're trying to make me sound like an alarmist, and I'm just stating accurate facts!. My gynecologist is not an alarmist and gives the vaccination to whomever asks for it - but not without explaining the facts first!.

Gardasil does not protect 100% against cervical cancer!.

Rhianna: This is getting ridiculous!. I mentioned the cost of the vaccination so that people who don't have insurance will know what it costs!. The vaccinations are also offered free at the health department in my county!. It's called giving a complete and thorough answer to a question!. That's all!.!.!.!.no secret agenda behind it!.

According to the Center for Disease Control:

Is the HPV vaccine effective!?

This vaccine is highly effective in preventing four types of HPV in young women who have not been previously exposed to HPV!. This vaccine targets HPV types that cause up to 70% of all cervical cancers and about 90% of genital warts!. The vaccine will not treat existing HPV infections or their complications!.

As I stated above, it should not be expected to prevent 100% of cervical cancer cases!. A yearly Pap smear is still recommended!.

Mike: There is nothing wrong with that!. The person who originally asked the question was looking for opinions on the subject!. I gave mine and backed it up with factual knowledge that I have acquired from legitimate sources!.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but simply giving my opinion!. I don't think the risks outweigh the benefits on this one!. My fear is that it is being touted (as I've stated above numerous times) as a protection from cervical cancer!. And it's not!.!.!.!.a woman can still get cervical cancer from HPV even with the vaccination!. I personally don't think it's a worthwhile vaccine at this point!.

I don't think people who get the vaccination are doing anything wrong!. It's a personal decision, and I respect that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

At age 27 I had to have an operation on my cervix due to cancer cells which were caused by the human pappilloma virus!. At the time I had been in a 5 year exclusive (for me) relationship which had ended when I found out he had been cheating on me!. So it's not what you do necessarily that gets you into hot water, but what everyone else does!. I had a piece of my cervix removed!. There was the chance that I would never be able to conceive children!. I met my husband at age 28, got married, and at 31 got pregnant!. I have a beautiful 13 year old boy that I thank God for everyday because due to someone else's actions, I could have been forever denied that privilage!. Look at the facts, read all the information, and realize that vaccines like this one save lives, and futures!. Like any vaccine there will be some who will react negatively to it!. But you have to weigh the odds and determine if it is worth it to you!. And also consider that you can never know who the person you are intimate with was intimate with in their own past, and so on and so forth !. !. !. !.get it!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's a great idea!. If girls age 11 would like to wait until they are perhaps 14 or 15 (if it makes them more comfortable with the idea of getting a shot or whatever) I could see that!. But it's really a very good idea for teenage girls who may become sexually active to just get it over with!.
It does not protect you from every form of cervical cancer, but having protection from the 4 most frequent causes is never something to say no to!.

(As a point of interest, I've heard from a few doctors that they may be thinking about giving it to boys in the near future, to prevent the spread of it altogether!.)Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm a nurse, believe me when I say this vaccination is a FANTASTIC thing!!!! It is not a magic pill or a silver bullet, but it can help save a lot of lives!. The bad press is exactly that, bad press!. Scaremongering by the media and people who dont know what they are talking about or fear anything new like this (look at the hype around the MMR!)

Please, get it!.

Wendy, like I said this isnt a magic bullet!. You are right when you say there are over 100 strains of the HPV virus and the vaccination only covers for a few of the different strains!. But that is still a few less strains to worry about!. That is still a few less chances that young girls may not get cervical cancer! What the hell is wrong with that!?Www@Answer-Health@Com
