A Question About Plastic Fumes?!

Question: A Question About Plastic Fumes!?
Today at the park I sat next to a girl who was lighting the end of a McDonald's straw on fire with a lighter (don't ask me why), and the plastic was melting and releasing white smoke!. I only inhaled a time bit of this, and since I was in a ventilated area I didn't feel dizzy or sick afterward!. It smelled exactly like burning army men (I used to do this with a magnifying glass)!. However, I heard plastic causes brain damage and smoke is only colored white when it burns improperly!. Help!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
The chemicals in burning plastic are fairly toxic, but the effects of inhaling toxic chemicals in burning plastic depend on the amount that is breathed in and how often this occurs!. Small amounts of the chemicals don't have much effect unless a person repeatedly breathes the smoke over periods of weeks or months!. A one-time incident where you breathe in a little smoke can affect only a limited number of cells in the body, so, its unlikely that a person would experience any noticeable effects!. That's why repeated exposures become a problem - because very small amounts of damage occur each time you are exposed, so eventually this damage adds up enough to cause problems!. you didn't get enough smoke to do any damage!. plastic is more toxic in a liquid state!. most of the styrene is consumed in combustion!.
