Son drinking/peeing a lot?!

Question: Son drinking/peeing a lot!?
I am the step-mom and diabetic myself, he's 7 and darn near everyone on his paternal side is diabetic, while his mother's side is pretty darn healthy!.

Lately, he's been drinking about 6 or 7 24 oz bottles of water a day and peeing a lot!. Now, PLEASE DON'T BASH ME!. We are not insured in my husbands new job and struggling a bit here, but we have a ton of meters here in the house so I just want to check him a few days and see where we're at before I knee-jerk him off to the Dr!. -

He's home all day with me cause we Christian homeschool, so I keep a pretty good check on his diet, although he is a bit chunky, not fat, but he's solid!.

I'm digressing!. I've been diabetic so long, I have kind of forgotten the best way to test, I test when I feel cruddy cause I can pretty much tell you w/in 10 points what my blood sugar is!.
O

OK so here is the question - to get some baseline readings, I am going to do this!.

first thing when he gets up
1 hour before a meal
and 1 hour after a meal!?

I'll keep a notes on the results so I can have something to show a doctor if need be!.
Until such time that I can take him to a doctor, I can control his food intake and check his BS to make sure he's not raging out of control!.

And are children's blood sugar rates different than adults!?

Believe me when I say that if the next 2 days show scary readings we'll find a way to get him to a doctor!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
you should check fasting, ie in the morning time
before a meal
1-2 hours after a meal
and 3-4 hours after a meal

basically these readings will tell you a lot

if its high in the morning there is a strong possibility his insulin levels are low

before the meal gives you a base guideline for where it should be after

most peoples sugars spike after a meal so although this reading is more than likely going to be high, its not one to worry about to much

and the one 3-4 hours after, by now if the boys body is producing insulin normally, the sugars should have returned to a normal level about 80-110

TARGET RANGES
Infants / toddlers / preschoolers
(110-220 mg/)

School-age children and some young adolescents
(70-180 mg/dL)

Kids sugars should be the same as adults!. They are health programs available for low income people, you should research that a bit!. Also, if you suspect diabetes, buy ketone strips at the local pharmacy (you don't need a prescription)!. If he has ketones, then you must go to the ER!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sounds like your a very good concerned step-mother!. Maybe a LP nurse will be able to respond to your question!. Google healthy childrens blood sugar rates and see what information you come up with!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

My very active 11 year old had similar symptoms!. Last Tuesday when he came home from school he was so hungry he poured himself a large bowl of cereal!. Before he could take a bite, I told him I wanted to check his blood sugar (I'm type 2, so like you I have a meter at home)!. His blood sugar was 486!. He was hospitalized that night because of his keytone levels in his urine!. We were told if we had waited another week to week and a half, he would have been hospitalized even longer!. He'd been drinking an urinating a lot for about 2 1/2 weeks!. Don't wait to test him!. If his BS is high, get him to the doctor!. I understand insurance issues, but there is probably a clinic in your area that you could take him to!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i understand your circumsatnces and all they will do in the doctor is check his urine and if that is questionable they will do a 24 hour sugar level when fasting on him!. My six year old did the same thing and his urine showed nothing!. it slowed down some though he still would rather drink than eat and he drinks A LOT which resorts into peeing a lot!. It scared us too but apparently it was a phase!. It even got to the point where he was wetting himself which is when our concern rose higher because even when potty training he had a total of 2 accidents and that was it!. The first 1/2 of kindergarten he wasnt able to go to the bathroom as often as when he was home and it never failed he would wet himself on the way home from school every day unless i made him go back into school and go before we left, So dont worry too much!. In regaurds to kids blood sugar levels Blood sugars are not based on age!. Anything over 100 up to 120 is considered borderline or pre diabetes!. Greater than 120 is considered for treatment for diabetes!. What was your little guy's sugar!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't know much about diabetics, but I know that drinking water is healthy for you!. You're supposed to drink something like 8 glasses a day anyway, so there's nothing wrong with that!. The fact that he's urinating a lot is simply a result of that!. Although it may be a diabetic side effect, so don't take my word on it!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
