Asthma affecting your voice?!

Question: Asthma affecting your voice!?
A woman I work with witnessed me have a severe asthma attack last year when I was rushed to the hospital!. Sometimes she'll check up to see how I'm doing!. I'm soft-spoken and somewhat shy, but I opened up to her!. I told her how my doctor called yesterday and said my IgE levels were slightly higher than they should be, but not high enough to qualify me for a monthly shot that could help!. She's worried about what I'm going to do now!. But I told her that I'm going to just work closely with my doc to monitor it!.

She said that she's dying to hear what my real voice sounds like!. I kind of shyly smiled and glanced down!. But then she acknowledged that I'm a soft-spoken person but she also said it's clear I'm suffering!.

Why do you think she said what she said about my voice!? I don't talk a lot and usually keep to myself!. I've opened up to her a little bit though!. Does asthma affect your voice!? Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
!.!.!.Yes, asthma can affect your voice!. Inhaled steroids could be the culprit as they are known to irritate the larynx!. If you are worried about a change in your voice have your doctor refer you to an ENT specialist to take a look at your vocal chords!. Take care!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Asthma is a disease that causes reversible airway obstruction!. These airways are generally medium-to-small in size and are located deep within the lungs!. They do not affect the trachea or major bronchi!. Asthma attacks do not normally cause voice changes because the vocal cords mark the border between the upper and lower respiratory tract, and lie much higher than the affected airways!.

Inhaled steroids, commonly used to treat asthma, may cause hoarse voice as a side effect!.

Another possible diagnosis is vocal cord dysfunction (VCD)!. VCD commonly causes asthma-like symptoms, but unlike asthma, is associated with voice changes!. Patients typically get sudden attacks that may or may not respond to typical asthma treatments!. They are often misdiagnosed as having "resistant asthma!." Unfortunately, patients can have both asthma and VCD, leading to a lot of confusion!.

You should discuss your symptoms and concerns with your doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
