Where to start looking for diabetic resources?!

Question:

Where to start looking for diabetic resources?

My 22-yr old cousin is staying with us. He is a type 1 diabetic and already has neuropathy.

His previous health care was provided through the Health Department, however, he missed so many check-ups that I'm not sure the doctors ever got a real handle on his situation and were almost "prescribing blind." I also doubt they were aware of how much sugar he was consuming before he moved in here.

Anyway, the health department in my area has told me that OUR household income makes him ineligible for their free services.... even though he's over 18, unemployed, and is just staying with us temporarily....

There doesn't seem to be much help out there for single males with no children and that makes sense, but this kid really needs to see a doctor now that his diet is more stable, and figure out if he's on the right medications at the right doses (I don't think he is). Any advice on finding funds or doctors willing to see him? I've already had to call 911 once.... please help!

Answers:

^Has he tried applying for Medicaid? I know you said because of your income he can't get services, maybe if he tells them his living situation is temporary and he will be living on his own it might help, if you're not supporting him they might help him.. Call hospitals in your area, and local government offices to inquire about free clinics or see if they can give you other options. If he can't work because of his neuropathy, he might be able to get disability. Good luck I hope this helps.
