Pet Scan Results......?!

Question: Pet Scan Results!.!.!.!.!.!.!?
I had a Pet Scan yesterday!. I have cervical cancer!. From what I have researched the cancer spots should light up bright on the screen!. I was only shown the dark spots!. The brain, bladder and the tumor were completely black!. He said that was normal due to the water and urine!. Was he not showing me all of the screens!? I know that I have to wait on the results to be read by the doctors!. But, Is this just the screen that they show the patients right after the scan!? Thanks in advance!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Speaking just from experience, if you ask the techs, they will usually show you something!. But they usually will not tell you too much!. I guess from a liability standpoint, they want you to wait to hear from the doctors (your radiologist and oncologist)!. On my PET scans, I've only seen the black-and-white view from the tech, but when I see my oncologist he can bring up the scan both in black-and-white and in full color on his computer!.

In a PET scan they inject glucose attached to a radioactive tracer!. Cancer, normal fast-dividing cells, and "active" areas of the body eat up the glucose and thus take up the tracer!. This causes what we call the "light up!." On the black and white screen, areas that look the darkest are areas of uptake!. On the color screen, it looks like a heat map where the brightest and hottest areas (red, yellows) -- represent the uptake areas!. I think that is where the term "light up" comes from!.

The heart, brain, and bladder should normally be dark or bright, depending on whether you're viewing it in black and white or color!.

Best of luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, I seem to recall the doc showed me all the images and went over the report!. The hot spots were my tumor site and the nearby nodes!. There were other areas that showed some activity, but that often do even though they aren't representative of malignancy!.

He may have sensed you were worried about metastasis and focused on showing you how the areas of likely spread were dark!.

You can always call/email him and ask for more information!. He's your doc, he needs to respond to your concerns!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

First, I have cancer too, and I have been told several times that PET scans only show a 1!.5 cm or larger spot!. Anything smaller will not show up!. Also, PET scans show increased metabolic activity, so if you have swelling somewhere, if you have a kidney stone, if you have gall stones, your heart, your brain etc!. these will all show up white!. That is why the radiologist has to read it!. It is too hard to distinguish what parts are what and if there is anything wrong with them for anyone not trained!. My collar bones show up bright white, but are not cancerous - that is because there is a lot of swelling around them from a previous surgery!. I have seen one with my docs, and it's hard to see what parts are what without them telling you!.

Good luck - you will have to see what the docs say!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Positron emission tomogram(PET scan)- done for a malignant tumour to study the local spread of the tumour as well as distant spread (metastasis)!.
!.Don't bother about the technical aspect of it- don't see the screen, don't talk to the radiology technician / Radiologist!.
Don't get panicky ,tense / confused!. Talk to your Gynaecologist!.He /she will explain u the disease & plan of treatment-after studying PET scan report!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

P!.E!.T!. Scans are very sensitive and unless you know what you are looking at/for there isn't really a reason to look at it until your DR!. goes over it with you!. The people administering the test can't tell you anything about what they see!. For these reasons I always wait to see my DR!. to discuss the results with him!. Good Luck to you, right now it is very scary but there is hope! (I have been cancer free for 2 years now)Www@Answer-Health@Com

That is normal!. Did he tell you what stage of cancer!? I had the last stage and had surgery to remove the spots and it has not come back!.
The surgery isn't bad its a big relief when it is done and over!. Good Luck to you!. Let me know if he told you what stage!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
