Answers:
1!. minimize sugar/carbohydrate intake!? - have water w/ lemon instead of soda; skip the bread served before meals (it's rarely whole grains anyway)!. If you want an appetizer, have something balanced that's more diabetic friendly!.

2!. avoid things high on glycemic index - whole grains have a lower GI than simple carbs (white bread, twinkies, etc!.)!. potatoes have a high GI, broccoli, raw carrots, etc!. have a lower GI!. Most important: eat carbohydrates combined WITH a protein and a fat, it will make the GI lower!.

3!. Fats - eat "real" fats: real butter, real sour cream, avocadoes, etc!.

4!. aspartame and fruit sugar - I don't do aspartame because I'm not convinced of its safety!. It might be okay, but I'm not going to be a guinea pig!. fruit sugar will affect your blood sugar, but it's better if you eat the whole fruit (whole raw apple) than, say applesauce, which has been processed!.

5!. beans/tofu - honestly, if you eat just beans without another protein source, it's probably going to aversely affect your blood sugar!.

6!. pantry - nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans, etc!.), keep a "lunch" size thing of tuna with you in the car at all times (it's spared me from having to call someone to drive me home many times)!. Most of what you need for snacks will need to be refrigerated!. Make up cups of cottage cheese, little snack bags of lunch meat, cut up some cheese slices, have bags of raw vegetables (carrots, celery, etc!.)!. Hard boil about 6-12 eggs at a time and put them in individual containers to grab on the run!. They last about a week!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Are you Type 2!? If so, your doc should have given you target carb levels not to exceed for each meal!. If you're Type 1, you just calculate your carbs (tricky, takes practice) and give yourself the right amount of insulin to cover it!.

There are no specific foods you need to avoid, but higher carb items include starches like rice, potatoes and corn, juices, fruits, sweet items of course, Chinese food (corn starch), pastas, and milk!., so you'll just want to learn the carb counts for different amounts and stay within your recommended carbs!.

When you eat fatty items (fried, buttery or cheesy sauces, pasta and pizza), be aware that the fat slows down the absorption of carbs, so you might see elevated BG's even several hours after eating them!.

Good snacks are veggies, berries, Triscuits, light cheeses, sugar-free versions of sodas, hot cocoa, and hot apple cider!. Beans are good but just watch the amounts because they have carbs!. Tofu doesn't have much, another good choice!. And lean meats and cheeses!.
