I have a heart murmur...?!

Question: I have a heart murmur!.!.!.!?
Hey!. Yesterday I went to my pediatrician and he told me that I had a heart murmur!. He asked me if I had been to a heart doctor before, and I told him I hadn't!. Then, he talked to my dad about it and referred me to a specialist!. Somethings I have noted about the symptoms : Sometimes, I get tired easily, and sometimes I feel like I have to faint, like I'm really dizzy!. Could this be a problem with the heart murmur or is it just an innocent murmur!? Thanks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
A murmur is valve regurgitation!. It's a shame your doctor didn't explain further!.

The heart is divided into 4 chambers: the upper two are the left & right atria (singular is atrium)!. The lower chambers are the left & right ventricles!. Blood returning to the heart empties into the right atrium and is passed through a valve into the right ventricle!. The left side of the heart has the same arrangement, a valve between the atrium and the ventricle!. The valves are located inside the ventricles and keep blood sent out from going back in from where it just came!. They have strong tendons (chordae tendonae) that are meant to prevent this backflow or regurgitation, as it's called!. When a valve is faulty or has faulty chordae tendonae, some blood leaving or entering a chamber flows back into the chamber it just left!. This regurgitation can be heard with a stethoscope as a whooshing sound!. This is what's known in layterms as a murmur!. A common site for this is the mitral valve in the left ventricle and the condition is mitral valve regurgitation!. I mention the mitral valve but I don't know which of your valves is involved!. There are 4!. Find out for your own knowledge!. The heart tries to compensate until it no longer can!. Sometimes the backflow cause the ventricle to enlarge to accomodate the extra blood!.

Your symptoms are typical and it's appropriate that you be followed by a pediatric cardiologist!. Below is a link to the anatomy of the heart!. I hope you will take it upon yourself to become as knowledgable as possible about regurge!. The second link is to the valves of the heart!. Look at it!. Regurge isn't always a serious matter and many live quite with it for all their long, long lives!. Your cardiologist will evaluate yours and tell you more!.
