Have you ever accidentally laughed when putting a catheter in a patient?!

Question: Have you ever accidentally laughed when putting a catheter in a patient!?
Answers:
I believe the situation you are about to face (student moving from the practice [lab] to the application [real-time w/patient) can be mitigated in several ways -and still take into account your nervousness:

(1) The physicians and head nurses have considered the fact that students are nervous and have judiciously selected patients that will not add to that nervousness (I speak from personal experience as a patient [and old man] who, on several occasions, when asked if students could participate in a procedure, I readily agreed -and yes, those experiences included inserting a catheter)!.

(2) You and your peers should be introduced as students to the patient and there should be some brief banter about nervousness and, if at all possible (I believe) some lightness of manner to break the tension!.

(3) From a personal standpoint, you can coach yourself to focus deeply just as you are about to conduct whatever procedure it may be!. If nothing else, deep breathes do help and clear your head by thinking of the sequence of steps necessary to be successful in what you are about to do !.!.!. tell yourself, Step 1 !.!.!., Step 2 !.!.!., etc!.

(4) We are all human beings and, as such, mistakes are made and it's grossly unfair to yourself and your peers to believe that you will not -at some point- make mistakes!. However, that's not to be focused on !.!.!. just accepted!.

(5) And finally, regardless of what you see when you're about to insert the catheter, the nursing code of ethics says you can't date the patient!

You will do great! Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have never laughed putting in a cath! When you get in the situation to put one in believe me you wont laugh!. There is nothing funny about it!. Even if you laugh when you get nervous i don't think you will in this situation!. Good luck and be careful!!!!!!!!!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

no, but if someone ever laughed while putting a cath in me, they'd never be coming around me again, and they'd be getting a complaint for unprofessionalism!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, I can't say that I have and even if I felt like laughing I wouldn't for the sake of the patient!. They are in enough misery!. Have a heart!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
