My son is having some hypoglycemic episodes - should I get him checked?!

Question: My son is having some hypoglycemic episodes - should I get him checked!?
My 3 year old will, about once or so a month, have an issue where he becomes very, very crabby, gets really sweaty, than cold, falls asleep and becomes impossible to rouse!. The only thing that will make him snap back to normal is drinking apple juice - after that he's fine and has no more problems, until the next time!. The first couple times it happened, I didn't know what it was, the urgent care doctor said I was imagining things because I said his temp was 96F (I gave him some juice in the waiting room and he was perfectly fine when we got to the doctor)
His father had some hypoglycemic issues when a teenager!. But, my 3 year old has a harder time recognizing the symptoms (or, his mother has a harder time just giving him sugary things every time he begs for them)!.

Does this sound like something I should get him checked out for or should I just leave it alone for now!? Www@Answer-Health@Com

My son used to do this, too!. He'd get so sick (always on waking up in the morning) that he'd actually throw up and be very pale and lethargic!. I checked his glucose and it was 40 (way too low)!. I did the same thing you do: get him to drink sugary juice and also eat crackers to get his sugar level back up!.

He'd do this frequently, about once a month or less, and then gradually these hypoglycemic episodes became less frequent and stopped on their own!. The doctor wasn't able to give me any reason or treatment for it, except of course to treat the symptoms, just like you are doing!.

If you're unable to wake up your son, you should call 911 because the only way to get glucose into an unconscious person is with an injection!. Otherwise, just try to regulate his diet so he doesn't have extreme highs and lows of sugar intake!. It would be very beneficial if you could get a glucose monitor and check his blood sugar regularly!. Write his glucose readings and symptoms in a journal that you can show to your doctor!.

Always keep a supply of sugar with you- candy, juice, honey, etc- to treat him when you see an episode coming on!. If your son is like mine, he will gradually outgrow this!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Get him checked out!.
Stop feeding him sugar/carbohydrates
Try a much healthier alternative to sodas/juices; any store bought liquids, as they are UN-HEALTHY (full of sugar)!.

You must have this checked out!. It sounds like your intuition is very good, and your son may have a condition that causes him to become hypoglycemic!. There are a number of metabolic and endocrinologic conditions that could cause this!. You must absolutely ensure that he sees a pediatrician!. Before your appointment keep a diary of these episodes in relation to eating, illness and sleep!. He should probably be referred to an endocrinologist, who should do a fasting test of blood sugar!. I stress that this must be supervised!. I am going to contradict MonaV, and advise you that, until you know that this is not a potentially serious metabolic condition, you must ensure that he gets adequate carbohydrates!. In possible metabolic conditions causing hypoglycemia, the treatment is to ensure that the child has adequate sugars!. These should not be sugars like sucrose, but should be sugars found in things like cornstarch and bread!. Apple juice and other sources of fructose are excellent, and you are doing the right thing giving him juice!. Until you see a pediatrician, I would not let him go more than 4-6 hours without some form of sugar!. Good luck, and please have him seen soon!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
