Question: Elevated liver enzymes!.!.!.is there ANYTHING that could be causing this that ISN'T serious!?
I went to the ER last week because I was having heart palpitations and shortness of breath!.!.!.I had blood work done and also an EKG and a chest x-Ray, and all came back normal except my elevated liver enzymes!. They said they were in the hundreds!. I went to see my doctor today, and they ordered blood work to be done for tomorrow and want me to go and have a sonogram on my liver!. I am so scared right now I can't stop crying, and the more research I do on elevated liver enzymes the more afraid I become because I don't see anything that looks like a good outcome!. I have to wait 5 days for the blood work results, and thats going to feel like an eternity to me!. I am only 24 years old, have a family, I hardly ever drink and never have been a heavy drinker, and I am not obese!. I am just really scared right now and any answers, insight, or prayers would be much appreciated!. Thank you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sarah, You CAN stop crying whiule you read on about elevated liver enzymes enzyme!.

What causes elevated liver enzymes!?
Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist Michael Picco, M!.D!., and colleagues state that a laboratory report of elevated liver enzymes is common and doesn't indicate a specific disease!. However, elevated liver enzymes may be due to liver disease even if you have no symptoms!. To determine the underlying cause of elevated liver enzymes, your doctor may recommend further testing!.

Common causes of elevated liver enzymes include:
Side effect of medication, such as certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cholesterol medications, antibiotics or anti-seizure medications
Drinking alcohol
Obesity
Diabetes
Elevated triglycerides
Infection, such as viral hepatitis and mononucleosis
Autoimmune disorders of the liver and bile ducts, such as autoimmune hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis or primary biliary cirrhosis
Metabolic liver disease, such as hemochromatosis or Wilson's disease
Excessive use of certain herbal supplements, such as kava, comfrey, pennyroyal or skullcap
Gallstones
Tumors of the liver, pancreas or bile ducts
Treatment of elevated liver enzymes depends on its cause!. It is important to tell your doctor about any nutritional or herbal supplements you're taking!.

So you see that most causes are benign and successfully treated!. By the way, the lab completes all liver tests with 2 working days, and you should request a copy of the lab results, including the normal ranges for each test so that you can compare!.
