High values of erythrocite sedimentation rate of one's blood sample-what does it!

Question:

High values of erythrocite sedimentation rate of one's blood sample-what does it mean healthwise?

One of my friends, who is HBV poitive & has just started treatment for the same, in recent tests done over a period of 10days, shows high values of ESR(About 120- 130).Is he in for further trouble?

Answers:

The Erythrocyte Sedimentation rate(ESR),in the past decades had been considered as an indicator for confirming any existing infection. However, research proved other implication too.
The ESR rises with age and anaemia. And also certain disease conditions such as,cancer, connective tissue diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney diseases, leukaemia and even soon after any major injury and stress all can rise ESR.
Certain type of treatments too can rise ESR.Any active infection is the other commonest reason too.
You no need to trouble your mind as high levels of ESR occurs as part of the disease process and it will resolve to normal or near normal when, underlying illness or factor is treated. Therefore, please do not worry.
I hope, the following formula will be of great useful if, you want to calculate your upper normal value of the ESR.
For men: Age in years / 2
For women: (Age in years+10) / 2
Hope, it helped.
Regards,
