Answers:
If the "In chest breathing tube" is in the mouth or nose and connected to a ventilator (breathing machine) it's called an endotracheal tube--and it is used for respiratory/ventilatory support!. It also protects the airway from secretions/stomach contents!.

If the "In chest breathing tube" is inserted into the side of the chest (below the nipple and to the side below the armpit) and connected to a container that is below the bed, that is a chest tube!. The container below the bed may be hooked up to suction and is used to collect fluid, blood, or a combination of both!.

How was the brain injured!? accident!? stroke!? drowning!? infection!? hydrocephalus!? seizures!? tumor/cancer!? even cardiopulmonary arrest!? etc!.!.!.!?

Brain damage occurs when there is a lack of perfusion to the brain-that is, a lack of oxygen to the brain!. The swelling in the brain could increase the pressure in the patients skull that would result in decreased blood flow!.

Is he asleep because he is under sedation to decrease oxygen demand in his brain!? Will he wake up if you call his name!? or pinch him hard!?

There is always a chance of living--BUT the quality of life is what i'm always asking patient's family members to consider!. He may survive with little to no neural deficits or he may be in a permanent vegetative state!. It depends where in the brain he was injured!. He may have to placed in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) and have a feeding tube in his nose or even through his abdominal skin to his stomach!. or he can be placed at home for his family to care for him!. Only time will tell!.

Best of luck to the patient AND his family/friends!. Please allow the patient to rest with minimal stimulation!. That includes the family and friends--get rest because this is a very stressful time!. Take care of yourselves!.

Swelling in the brain is called cerebral oedema, and is a serious medical condition!. The prognosis can range from reasonably good to dismal - it depends partly on the degree of swelling, and partly on the cause!.

Naturally, very severe swelling will almost certainly lead to permanent brain damage, and often means that recovery of consciousness is unlikely!. Mild swelling means better outcomes, potentially full recovery without any damage!.

The prognosis is also related to the cause - generally, the worse outcomes are related to trauma (eg!. car accident) and infection (eg!. meningitis)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

What do you mean by saying breathing tube!? Is it Beathing Chest Tube!? or Nasogastric Tube!?

"Is there any chance of him living!? If so what about brain damage possibilties!?"
- It actually depends on the etiology of the problem!. Since I don't know the possible cause, I cannot give you infos you needed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
