Question:

Hi,i had a blood glucose test done at the hospital and after 2 hours my levels were 2.4 what does that mean?

My GP sent me to the hospital as i was having loads of problems with my health, mainly my memory, mood swings, and sleeping alot.He gave me a kit so i could keep track of my bloods and sent me for a blood glucose test the next morning.I took my own kit along and took a reading just before the nurse called me back in to have the 2 hour bloods done,it was 2.4?? what does this mean??

Answers:

Hi, I too am diabetic and was diagnosed 7 years ago. The blood test you had done sounds like Glucose Tolerance Test, this basically measures your blood before and after drinking some glucose. This gives the doctor a good understanding of whether you have sufficient amounts of insulin to react to the glucose you had drunk (if you were given some to to drink). Undiagnosed diabetics sugar levels would only be high and NOT LOW. The reason why diabetics have low sugar levels is because they have injected too much insulin, which as a result send their levels too low.

Are you a diagnosed diabetic already and injecting? If so, you need to review your dose as 2.4 is hypoglycemia which means you need to eat some fast acting carbohydrates such as jelly beans to correct this.

If you are not a diagnosed diabetic and therefore not taking insulin. Your sugar level results are very low which would suggest you are not eating enough carbohydrates in your diet or perhaps your pancreas is working too well and producing more than the required amount of insulin required. Can I have some, I haven't got any? :o)

My partner often experiences low sugar levels (I test him but not diabetic) and suffers from similar symptoms to you. Mood swings/tiredness is also a classic sign of low sugars.

Have you ever heard of the Glycemic Index diet? This is excellent for looking at what foods do to your sugar levels......worth a try!

Hope this helps!
