Answers:
cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus, most often type1!.
by the age of 40, 90% of the population in the USA has this virus -- even people who've never had a visible cold sore!.

so yes, you probalby have the virus, and you may go the rest of your life without a cold sore, or you may get one tomorrow!. You are lucky that your immune system has kept you free of this nuisance for so long! There's nothing you can really do to prevent them, except good nutrition and good rest!.
