Hi there
It is all a bit confusing! Essentially one advances to become the other!.

The illness is a virus (like the common cold) so when you first catch it, it is called Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV!. Just like a cold, often when you first catch it, you have no idea because there are not enough virus particles to cause symptoms!.

Viruses are very clever because when they invade the body the go inside the cell and take over it, but leave the outside looking just the same (a bit like termites in a house) so our immune system doesn't recognise their is anything wrong until the cell is completely ruined (or the house is falling down)

HIV takes this one step further!. The virus invades the immune system cells!. So not only does the immune system recognise the threat but by the time it could there are no decent immune cells left to fight the virus!.

This is where the term AIDS comes in, or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome!. AIDS is the term used when so many of the bodies cells have been overrun that the body cannot defend itself!.
AIDS is the term for the symptoms or problems caused by the virus overrunning the body rather than the name for the disease itself!.

This is why someone with HIV may just stay HIV positive for a very long time without actually having AIDS!.
Medications can keep the virus at a level that allows the body to still function OK!.

I hope this helps shed a little light!Www@Answer-Health@Com

HIV is the virus that can lead to AIDS!. It is all based on your T-cell count!. When the T-Cells of a HIV+ person drop below 200 it then becomes an AIDS diagnosis!. There other way a person can be diagnosed as AIDS is to have opportunistic infections that won't clear up and a Doctor can make the diagnosis!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS!. AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome!. So basically the HIV virus causes your immune system to screw up and that causes the syndrome AIDS!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

HIV is a virus and can be transmitted from one person to another!.

AIDS is a set of illnesses or opportunistic infections, which affect people with advanced HIV!. You cannot transmit AIDSWww@Answer-Health@Com

AIDS is when you you are about to die beacause you have fully blown hiv!.
