Its is always said that alcoholism can be hereditary...?!

Question:

Its is always said that alcoholism can be hereditary...?

Are there truly predisposition traits that are genetic, and are they only exhibited when one becomes involved with alcohol himself? Is it considered hereditary only if the parent is an alcoholic before or at the time of conception?

Answers:

Yes, children of alcoholics have a genetic predisposition to developing the disease. A child of an alcoholic parent will not automatically develop alcoholism, and a person with no family history of alcoholism can become alcohol dependent.

And it doesn't matter if the parent was alcoholic before conception; if they had the predisposition themselves, it would be passed on.
