Answers:
BIPAP stands for Bi Level Positive Airway Pressure!. This device exerts positive pressure on the airway to allow for easier breathing!. What looks to you like "a sucking action" is actually air being blown into the airway under pressure to open the airway!. It is a therapy often used for those in respiratory distress from COPD or heart failure!. A similar device - CPAP, is used for those with sleep apnea!.

BIPAP basically makes it easier for a person in respiratory distress to breathe and ventilate more effectively!. It is often helpful in avoiding more invasive and uncomfortable airway interventions, such as endotracheal intubation (putting a tube down someones throat to help them breathe)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

First off, the Bipap does not cure COPD

It only assists the patients to breath by providing a positive pressure to open the airways if they are closed!. And it require some settings!.

If patient can breathe on their own, the bipap are automatically off and when the airway pressure becomes too low that are nearly or already closed (i!.e!. breathing will become difficult), the bipap steps in to give pressure to expand some of the airways!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Basically the BIPAP machine forces air deeper into the lungs, causing the oxygen exchange in the lungs to increase!. So when she can't get enough "air" (oxygen) in, this machine does it for her!. If this doesn't help, mechanical ventilation (breathing machine) is often the next step!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
