I got my blood results today what do they mean?!

Question:

I got my blood results today what do they mean?

Hi, I went to the doctor today and the secretary handed me my blood results (the doctor was not in) does anybody know what this mean.... monocytes % HIGH and Monocytes # HIGH???

Answers:

Monocytosis is excess monocytes in the blood (normal range is 3-8%). A leukocyte is a white blood cell. A monocyte is a type of leukocyte produced in the bone marrow. It circulates in the bloodstream for 1-3 days, ingesting dead/damaged cells and providing immunological defenses. It then moves into body tissues and becomes a macrophage, which continues to protect against foreign bodies.

If your lab results were out of range, someone should have been available to explain the implications to you. Being handed lab results that are not WNL (within normal limits) is not a good policy for a doctor's office.

As you have not provided the monocyte percentage or count, the only information that I can provide is that monocytosis may be a result of inflammation. There are WAY too many conditions that could cause monocytosis; the answer would depend on your exact count. For information on what monocytosis can mean, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/monocytosis... But DO NOT assume you have one of these conditions. Your physician must diagnose you, which he/she will do based on other factors you have not provided us, such as your age, sex, general health, and other health problems.
