Who has had experience with the insulin pump?!

Question:

Who has had experience with the insulin pump?

My husband's diabetes (type 1) is completely out of control.

Answers:

I have had my pump for 6 years. I was on it for 2 years, then off it for 4. I recently went back on it (about 2 months ago). I love it and I regretted going off it (my old doctor's choice; my new one was more than happy to let me go back on it).

If you want to email me some specific questions, I'll be happy to answer them. You can also go to minimed.com for more information on pumps and request an information pack and video about them.

To me, pumps are lifesavers. I love the convenience and freedom the pump allows. My sugars are in much better control and I feel much healthier. I was on MDIs (multiple daily injections). Even taking Lantus, I did not have the control that I have with the pump. It doesn't take much to get used to wearing one...it's much like wearing a pager. They are small and usually the only people who recognize them are other pump users and health care professionals. My pump also works well with me on the job. Since I'm an EMT, I work some very long and irregular hours. I may go hours between meals and the pump allows me to maintain my sugar without the yo-yos I had previously.

Good luck.

PS Insurance usually covers pumps an supplies. They are expensive but well worth it.
