Tinnitus -?
My mother recently complained of a hissing sound in the ear and when she went to see her doctor she was told to have a condition called tinnitus.
What is that all about? Is it in any way dangerous?

I too have tinnitus and indeed have the the very same noises i.e. a hissing sound. I got lots of help and advice from the people over at t-gone.com and found that my tinnitus was caused from loud noise - I love concerts and clubs.
They have recommended a remedy for cochlea damage tinnitus which I must say is helping me somewhat as the hissing is not nearly as bad now as it originally was.
Another bit of help I got from them was to invest in a decent pair of ear plugs which I now use when I go out - and you know what? I never get that bruised ears - ringing for a couple of days feeling that I used to get after clubbing.
