As many as 10% of adults have this problem. It is both resistant to treatment and time consuming to treat. None of the so called alternative therapies will touch nail infections which are very deeply ingrained. All treatments only work on the growing nail.
Loceryl Laquer is an excellent topical preparation. It is much cheaper to obtain on prescription than to buy over the counter. It is apllied 1-2 times a week, using an emery board to expose the nail surface first. It takes 1-2 years to clear a severly infected toenail, but has no side effects.
The alternative is to take an oral anti-fungal such as Lamisil tabets, available on prescription they take about 9-12 months but have a number of potential side effects, the most notable of which is liver toxicity.
