Un-born baby has a multi-cystic kidney, I need information?!

Question:

Un-born baby has a multi-cystic kidney, I need information?

I am 26 weeks and the ultrasound showed cysts in one of my boys kidney's, The doctor diagnosed it as a multi-cystic kidney. No reason as to why it happened, he said sometimes is just appears. It makes me so sad but they say there is no reason to be because he's not going anywhere. He'll just need to be monitored throughout the pregnancy and when he is born. Any advice or information? Can it heal on it's own?

Answers:

My son is 11 months old and has multicystic kidney on left side. Know that in normal circumstances your baby will be monitored approx every 6 months during childhood and of course as soon as he is born. You will have more ultrasounds during pregnancy also. It does not heal or correct itself, he will only have one functional kidney for life, but the good one grows in size to compensate for the one that does not function. It's scary, but read as much as you can from trusted sources so you know what questions to ask. Also prepare yourself for possibilities of complications with the other kidney. My son was reday to go home from the hospital and ended up spending a week in NICU. Everything was fine, but they ran several extra tests just to make sure he was ok and his healthy kidney was truly healthy. (not every newborn undergoes such tests). We just went last week for his ultrasound and checkup with urologist. Now there is another possible complication with his healthy kidney, so we go back in 2 months for different testing again. Even still, he looks very healthy and is a happy normal baby. Take a deep breath and know that it's going to be a journey, but he's going to be ok and you'll have lots of cuddle time when he gets here. It also doesn't have much affect on day to day life for him other than limit sodium in his diet and no contact sports (so no football star anytime soon!) Hope this is helpful to you.
