Answers:

TSH stands for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone.

When your thyroid gland is not producing enough hormone, your pituitary gland produces more TSH to try to stimulate the thyroid to produce more hormone itself.

Your thyroid regulates many body functions - mainly your metabolism.

Having an underactive thyroid is known as Hypothyroidism and it is easily treated. Usually someone will be placed on synthetic thyroid hormone - 1 pill daily for the rest of your life.

It must be corrected though because uncorrected it can cause serious complications and even become life threatening.

Symptoms are fatigue, dry skin, hair loss, memory problems, intestinal problems, inability to tolerate colder temperatures, weight gain, etc.

Hypothyroidism could be primary or secondary. In other words it could be something that is a singular problem, or it could be a problem due to a more severe medical condition. Usually an autoimmune disorder (ex: arthritis, lupus, etc.).

Your husband will need to see an Endocrinologist to get further tests done - testing TSH, T3, T4, T7 uptake. Also, he should get an ANA test done to see if he has a potential autoimmune disorder.
