If you recently had an athmatic attack, a doctor might notice inflammation in the bronchial airway!. But, generally, it's difficult to tell asthma from a quick physical (if there is no wheezing or stridor)!. Usually, you would have to tell your doctor that you have a history of problems breathing - difficulty breathing, a tightness or itching chest, coughing!.

When asthma occurs, long-term and short-term inflammatory mediators are released from the body (for example, leukotrienes and mast cells) to cause narrowing of the bronchiole tree!. Most of the inflammation slowly goes away!. But, there are mild changes that occur in the respiratory system!. Over time, asthmatics have an irreversible narrowing of the bronchiole tree that develop, and this would produce wheezing/stridor even if there was no recent asthmatic attack!.

A doctor can test you with a peak flow meter, and give you methacholine, a drug to induce asthma!. Or, they could give you a treatment for asthma, and monitor improvement!. But, there is no quick or definitive physical exam test!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No!. There would have to be some indication of asthma, such as wheezing!. However, when the patient describes symptoms that correspond with asthma, they may choose to err on the side of caution and diagnose asthma!.
