Burning in throat?

lately a LOT whenever i burp or something like that there's a little burning in my throat, not very severe or anything but it's definitley a problem. and after i can still feel some of the burning in my throat lingering, but like i said it's pretty mild. does anyone know what could cause this? i'm 17 btw.

Answers:

This may be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. Your esophageal sphincter (the opening between your esophagus and stomach) is supposed to remain closed when you are not eating. If it opens and stomach acids "back up" into your esophagus, you may feel a burning or have a "bad taste".

You do not have to have heartburn or indigestion to have GERD. If untreated, GERD may result in erosive esophagitis (the esophagus is inflamed by stomach acid and sheds cells); which may result in Barrett's Esopagus (a precancerous condition), which may result in esophageal cancer.

Discomfort is not always present when your esophagus is being damaged; you may feel shortness of breath, chest pain, chest tightness, or a "lump in your throat".

You mention this has been happening "lately a LOT". You should consider evaluation by a physician to see if you would benefit from a reflux medication such as Nexium, acipHex, or Protonix.

I have seen patients in their 30's die from esophageal cancer resulting from untreated GERD. Don't panic, this isn't happening to you right now! But it does mean you should see your physician to discuss this.
