What is wrong when stoma is pain?!

Question:

What is wrong when stoma is pain?

Answers:

I am assuming when you mention stoma, you mean either a colostomy stoma or ileostomy stoma. There is usually no pain if you touch a stoma seeing as it has no nerve endings. But if you do, it could be a number of things ranging from a yeast infection, allergy, or even a fistula starting.

have an ileostomy for 21 yrs. I can tell you this: if you are experiencing pain, go to your colorectal surgeon (the MD who created your stoma) to have it checked or see if the hospital where you had your surgery has an ET nurse that you can talk to. That's an RN who specializes in ostomy and wound care.

For more information, check out the united ostomy association of america site. they have a number you can call as well with questions. The people are very familiar with ostomies.

If your ostomy bag is full of black, tarry output or bright red output, go to the ER STAT. That means you are bleeding from your stomach and it needs to be treated as soon as possible.
