Eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated (unprotected) water is the cause of water borne diseases like cholera and typhoid!. A germ called Salmonella infecting the bowels is supposed to cause the ailment marked by white coating in the tongue, diarrhoea and high fever!.!. Chloromycetin used to be given for a course of 21 days before, now they give norfloxocin is given with supportive drugs to reduce the fever!. You will be advised to take bland food as the bowels would be ulcerated due to the activity of the bacteria!.
So dont take food from road side eateries particularly where the flies freely sit on the food items and the shop keeper does not use hand gloves!.!. where polluted water may be used!.!.etc
Now vaccine against typhoid is available and could protect the person upto one year!. So if you are in an endemic area (where the disease is found widespread in the wet seasons) it is best to take the vaccine yearly!.
