What is "prison glower"?!

Question:

What is "prison glower"?

"If it's prison golwer," the physician explained, "he'll lose the sight in that eye, and if the infection spreads, he'll be blind in both."

Answers:

I have heard of jail or camp fever (typhus), deplumation (loss of eyelashes d/t tumor).
But glower, in this case, refers to the half-eye look of Galen due to his eye infection, probably a severe conjuntivitis, perhaps an adenovirus... I am assuming we are quoting from the Queen of Attolia, if memory serves me right....
here is a link about conjuntivitis...
