I have a collapsed lung. Can I put off going to hospital for two weeks?!

Question: I have a collapsed lung!. Can I put off going to hospital for two weeks!?
Right!. Hello!. You're looking lovely today!. You do!. No, I mean that!. Your hair: It looks smashing!.

Now that pleasantries have been dealt with, let's get down to business: I'm a reasonably fit and healthy twenty two year old bloke, and I've had a history of spontanious pneumothoraxes (I don't know the correct pleural of pnemothorax!. Please don't pull me up on it!.) on my right hand side!. I had a pleurodecies (again, spelling not my forte) in Janurary which means Mister Right Lung can never collapse again!. Hurray!.

The bad news is that Little Miss Left Lung is noncing about and I'm 99% sure I've got another collapsed lung, on my usually reliable left hand side!. I have a lifeguarding qualificaiton in two weeks!. It just involves swimming a few lengths and diving to the bottom of a 1!.8 metre pool!. I've done a lot of swimming in my time and passing the test is no sweat!. But the sixty four thousand dollar question is this:

Can I put off going to the hospital for two weeks!? i!.e!. Will anything bad happen if I get my qualification out the way!. (If I go in and get my lung sorted, I'll be out of commission for five weeks!. My plan is to do my qualification and then get a job as a life guard!. They need to do a CRB check which will take a month: Long enough for me to go into hospital and get sewn up and made better!.)

Any thoughts!?

P!.S!. I live in the UK and the NHS will make you better for free!. I don't have to worry about insurance or anything like that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi there,
I understand how badly you want to pass your upcoming qualification but unfortunately a collapsed lung is always a condition that requires medical attention!. If you leave it untreated you will likely find it gets even worse and much furthers jeopardises your chances of being ready for your upcoming dive test!. Additionally, left untreated a collapsed lung will often cause build-up of fluid in the pleura (lung cavity) that will require a hospital stay for drainage!. Aside from that, the chances of you performing to your usual standard in the dive test with a lung capacity of 50% at most are fairly poor!.
Please go get this dealt with immediately so you can be back at your best as soon as possible!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You are joking right!? The way I see it, you won't make it to the bottom of the pool, and that if you tried, I hope that you have considered the great responsibility you are putting on the lifeguards who are on duty that day!. It doesn't sound like a good idea, a bit like flying a long haul flight if you have thrombosis!. Your qualifications are secondary to your health!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It is better to live than to swim!. Get it fixed and do the life guard thing when you are completely fit!.!.!. even if it is a year away!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My dads lung callapsed last year and he didnt know it happened and 3 weeks later he fainted at work and spent 2 weeks in hospital and a operation!. So i would go nowWww@Answer-Health@Com

Get round the hospital now!. They will tell you whether doing your qualification first is a good idea!. I think it may kill you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The real question is - CAN YOU dive down 1!.8 metres (whats that - 6 feet!?) with a lower lung capacity than normal!?

I personally would not advise it!.

Hello :-) i have had two pneumothoraxes too!. The first was also in my right lung, then 18 months later the left lung!. The second pneumothorax wasnt as painful as the first, is this the same in your case!? If so you may as well get it over and done with at the hospital as in my case they did the drain and I was out the same day (albeit i discharged myself, but they only wanted me to stay in overnight)!. At least if you go into hospital now you can get it over and done with and you wont have to worry about being ill while you take the test!. You may fail if u are not 100% fit!?!? GOOD LUCK xWww@Answer-Health@Com
