Answers:
I doubt your doctor is stupid, but he may not be tactful!. To assess what is going on you really need to know the full lipid profile and most particularly the Cholesterol/HDL ratio!. Some people have a raised total cholesterol but the ratio means they are not at risk!. Try and find out more detail!Www@Answer-Health@Com

HI,it's unfortunate that yo have to deal with cholesterol even you have tried to stay away from it as much as possible!.Yes,like everyone mentioned it can be hereditary and not necessarily a negligence in you diet!.

There are many things that can help lower your cholesterol,I am not saying you should substitute them for medicines but can sure ask your doctors!.!.!.

These are a list of foods that can significantly reduce LDL ( bad cholesterol):

Oatmeal and oat bran:
Oatmeal contains soluble fiber, which reduces LDL, !.Soluble fiber is also found in such foods as kidney beans, apples, pears, psyllium, barley and prunes!.

Walnuts,Almonds:
Walnuts reduce blood cholesterol, most nuts have fatty acids which also help lower your cholesterol, eating a reasonable amount every day will dramatically reduce your cholesterol levels

Fish and Omega-3 Fatty Acids:
Some of the fishes that are higher in omega 3 are mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon!.

Olive oil:
Olive oil has antioxidants that help you lower your bad cholesterol but leaving the good one!.You will get more benefits if you use the extra virgin kind!.

Plant Sterols or Stanols
The American Heart Association recommends them for people with an LDL level of 160 mg per deciliter!.Foods that contain plan sterols and Stanols are Margarines, orage juice and yogurts that are fortified with sterols and stanols!.

Hope this helps, there is a lot you can do for yourself if you eat these foods

Based on my experience, high cholesterol doesnt mean to be over weight!. Even skinny people like me, my uncles, my grandmother & my cusson can have it too, probably due to genetic/DNA factor (inheritance)!.

besides the factor of eating habitual/diet, another significant factor is stress/depression, can increase cholesterol too!.

Your body makes most of it's own cholesterol!. Only a small part is in what you eat!.

Personally, I'd get that checked again before I went on any medications!. And exercise can have a profound effect on the level in some people so you might try working out!. Also, the test should be done after fasting a day!. If it's done soon after you eat or something the results can be off!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You can still be slim and unhealthy and have high cholesterol!. This isn't something that just affects overweight people!. It isn't just diet induced either!. Sometimes people are also genetically prone to cholesterol problems; it can affect people at any age with a strong family history of early heart disease or stroke, and people at any age with a family history of a hereditary lipid (cholesterol) disorder!.

There are certain conditions/factors that may mean some people are more prone to having high cholesterol level!. For example, an under-active thyroid gland, obesity, excess alcohol and some rare kidney and liver disorders can raise the cholesterol level!.

In some people, a very high level of cholesterol runs in the family due to an inherited genetic problem with the way cholesterol is made!. Another example is called familial hypercholesterolaemia or familial combined hyperlipidaemia

The common mistake many people make is thinking, 'I'm slim so it won't effect me' It doesn't work like that!. Even if your slim, it is never OK to eat excess fatty foods!. You haven't included details of your lipid profile!.

Throughout our lives we need to all make sure we;
Reduce salt intake
Stop smoking
Keep as close to our ideal weight as possible
Do daily exercise
Eat a healthy balanced diet!.

Even with drug therapy such as Statins, you STILL have to do the above, the Statins won't make much difference alone if one dosen't make the above lifestyle changes!. You need to have a chat with your Dr again to look at possible other underlying factors to why your cholesterol is high at your age and then take it from there!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi,
Please don't be upset, I have a male friend 2 years younger than you who is 6'2", very thin, and with sky-high cholesterol; you haven't done anything wrong, and neither has your doctor!. 1 in 2 people in the adult population have high cholesterol, and many of them are not overweight!. I see plenty of patients with high cholesterol who are of normal weight, so don't feel alone!.
Try to think about what you eat each day and where you might be getting excess cholesterol from - things like fast food, eggs, non-lean meat, nuts, etc are all common sources of cholesterol!. If you can't work out where the excess is coming from, consider seeing a dietician or nutritionist who can help you figure you where it's coming from and what you can do to correct it!.
Additionally, if you have a family history of high cholesterol it is possible your levels are being caused by a hereditary condition, as hyperlipidaemia is seen to run strongly through family lines!. Consider also talking to your doctor about whether there might be other reasons (eg thyroid problems, metabolic imbalances) which are pushing your levels up!.
Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
