Can Klebsiella Pneumoniae be considered a vaginal pathogen responsible for vagin!

Question: Can Klebsiella Pneumoniae be considered a vaginal pathogen responsible for vaginal infections!?
Answers:
Normally this would be disregarded as a contaminant if obtained on a vaginal swab!.

However, in medicine, you always have to keep an open mind!. There are situations where this could be entertained as a true pathogen!. For example, if there is a lot of redness in the vagina, visible pus, and a gram stain from deep in the vagina that shows only WBCs, and many gram-negative rods, then the pure growth of klebsiella would have to be taken seriously, unless there were some other cause of the vaginitis that could be found!.

Also, if there truly were vaginal symptoms, including drainage, and even air coming from the vagina, the finding of klebsiella might indicate an abnormal connection of the colon to the vagina, which is called a "fistula"!.

So you always have to be careful -- your doctor has to put this culture result in the framework of your entire history and physical exam!.

If you are completely clinically well, and the culture was done as a "routine" (in other words for no reason at all !), then this result should be ignored!. It is not an organism normally associated with vaginitis!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, it naturally occurs in the intestines!. Outside the intestines it can cause things like UTI's however!.
