Question: What does a CEA blood level 96 mean!?
My 82 year old aunt was sent for a CEA blood test!. The level came back at 96!. What does this suggest, could it be something other then cancer!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
CEA is often used to monitor patients with certain cancers that produce CEA (e!.g!. specific colon cancers, ovarian and breast cancers)!. It can also be raised in benign conditions such as liver disease, Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis!. It can also be high in smokers!.

"normal" is less than 2!.5microns per litre, so 96 seems very odd!. Could the measurement scale be different on your aunt's result!?

The test on its own is not diagnostic - it is more useful in monitoring known cancers to check whether they are growing / returned!. The doctor should now do more tests, or refer your aunt to a specialist to determine what is wrong!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The normal range for a CEA blood test is approx!. 2!.5 micrograms/Liter!. I am not too familiar with the subject, but to have a lab value that is so off has to mean something different!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
