Zocor & High Blood Pressure?!

Question: Zocor & High Blood Pressure!?
My husband's Blood Pressure has skyrocketed since taking Zocor!?!?
He is on BP meds as well!. His Doc has upped his BP meds and put him on additional meds!. He has also been taken off the Zocor!.

He was on Zocor for 3-4 months and lost 55 points on his "total" Cholesterol!.

I am almost concerned about all the fat breaking up in his blood and causing a blockage!.!.!.could this be possible!?!?!?
thanks for any info ! TeriWww@Answer-Health@Com

Hello Teri!.

Your husband and you have no need to worry about the Zocor(simvastatin) "breaking" up the cholesterol!. Zocor is a part of a drug class called the statins!. All these drugs do is slow or stop the production of cholesterol!. They don't do any kind of "breaking"!.

Different medicines have different affects on people, but I must say that I have never heard of zocor increasing someone's BP!. Their only real affects is that they tend to raise liver enzymes and can, very rarely, cause muscle toxicity!. This may be delving too deep into this, but *ahem* Zocor is broken down in the body by a set of liver enzymes called CYP enzymes(namely CYP3A4 for Zocor)!. If he is on any other medication that uses the same enzyme, it could have used that same pathway or something resulting in less of the other drug to be broken down!.

I hope your physician kept him on some kind of statin because he was seeing good results!. There are other statins that don't use the CYP3A4 pathway like fluvastatin or pravastatin that he could also try!. I would also make completely sure it was the drug and nothing else!.

Hope that helps!Www@Answer-Health@Com
