Type 1 Diabetes at age 40?!

Question: Type 1 Diabetes at age 40!?
My dad had to be rushed to the hospital yesterday after passing out after dinner!. He complained that he felt dizzy, and as was going upstairs to lay down he just fainted!. I panicked because it's just me and him living together, but I eventually called my neighbors for help, and he was eventually taken to the hospital where they pronounced him as a Type 1 diabetic!. I only thought children and young adults could get Type 1 and older adults get Type 2!. He isn't overweight or anything but still!. He has been having weird symptoms for about a month now, like getting weird rashes on his arm, getting tired after doing anything, drinking more stuff like orange juice and other sweets other than water!. I noticed this but didn't pay no mind to it thinking he's just getting older!. His 2 older sisters have it, but they got it when they were teenagers!. And do I have a chance of getting it now that he has it!. I'm 15!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There is only a 3 to 5% chance of you getting it!.
It's not to unusual for a man of 40 to get type 1 diabetes!. It would be rarer if he were 60!. He was drinking sweeter things like juice because his body was craving it!. I know several people who craved sweets before being diagnosed!. Everyone is different!. We all get different complications and different problems before being diagnosed!. I have a rare complication because I've has type 1 for 38 yrs!. Good luck!. It will be your responsibility to encourage your dad to eat a healthy diet!. If he eats healthy food he should live longer!.
I suggest you attend a few diabetic meetings!. If your dad has an insulin reaction and you are the only one home with him you will have to give him juice, glucogon, glucose, etc!. He will need you!. I'm not trying to scare you but there will be times with you may need to help him!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

My mum was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes last year, and she is also 40!. Your dad has a rare form of Diabetes called LADA!. I can't remember what it stands for, but it is basically just type 1 Diabetes in adults!. Oh, and yes, you do have a chance of getting it, as do I!.

its a little weird, but not unheard of!.
it may have just been lying in wait, and something triggered it right around that time!. type one is genetic, so it can wait for a long time for the right conditions to make it come out!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's not as common as type 2, but older adults can develop type 1!. Anne Rice did a few years ago in her 40s!.

It is not abnormal!. My friend is 41 and had same problem!. He was very tired all the time and craving all sorts of sweets!. First I thought it was too much weed but he was not smoking!. Turns out his body was craving sugar and when he had too much sugar he would actually attract ants!.!.!.the little tiny kind would line up and try to get on him to the couch or bed to eat off the extra sugar!. Your Dad is lucky they caught it!. My friend almost went into a coma before it was diagnosed!. He is now healthy as a horse and takes insulin!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Its not that remarkable- I've had lots of patients come in newly diagnosed with their insulin prescription!. The genetics of type 1 diabetes isn't worked out yet and is complicated because essentially the link appears to be related to an ability to produce antibodies against your beta islet cells when triggered by an unknown antigen ( virus) !.Also, you don't get immediate destruction of the cells!.!.!.its possible his initial event started maybe when he was 32 with a minor illness he recovered from rapidly!.
You simply cannot calculate a genetic risk in the same way you could calculate a risk for cystic fibrosis if your second child was born with it!. Furthermore, I'd speculate that as the molecular biology of type 1 diabetes becomes apparent you will simply have a dna test to target possible candidates!. It may be possible then to eliminate the autoantibodies that destroy the beta islet cells by plasma exchange in the same way they treat myasthenia gravisWww@Answer-Health@Com

You're badly misinformed!.

Type 1 Diabetes is caused by the pancreas "quitting"!. That means that it does not produce insulin!. Without insulin shots, the patient will die!. This OFTEN seen in children, but it is not limited to children!.

Type 2 Diabetes is caused when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin!. This usually happens when someone is overweight!. It usually happens in adults, but many many children get it, too!.

Many adults start as Type 2 Diabetics, but when they don't take care of the disease (they just think thay are getting older !. !. !. !.) the pancreas just "gives up" -- so they are now Type 1 Diabetics!.

And there is a problem with children who play too many video games and do not get outside to ride bikes, play soccer, or even just take a walk EVERY day!. The set around playing vide games, eating snacks and drinkg soda pop!. So they gain weight, and they become Type 2 Diabetics!. In fact, the fastest number of Type 2 diabeteics is in children 12-18!

Your Dad has it, your aunts have it -- yeah, you;ve got a really good chance of getting it too!.

Diabets canNOT be cured, but it CAN be PREVENTED!. And if you start now, your chances are very good that you will never get it!.

1) NO SUGARS -- That means no colas, sports drinks, energy drinks, natural fruit drinks, ice cream, cakes, cookies, candies, and sugared cereals!. No desserts! You CAN have sugar-free or artifical sweetened foods, like Diet Coke or iced tea!.
2) LESS STARCHES -- fewer breads, crackers, rice, corn, potaotes (especially french fries) and pastas!. You can have some -- just cut back!.
3) EAT MORE FIBERS -- like green vegetables, whole grain breads, and Cheerios!. Eat more salads!.
All in all, ask your Dad's doctor to recommend you to a nutritionist!.
4) GET MORE EXERCISE -- ride bike, play soccer, walk 1 mile a day!. Get serious, sweaty exercise at least 5 days a week!
5) LOSE WEIGHT -- Ask your doctor what your "normal" weight should be, and stay really close to it!.

Now, this goes for Dad too! You'll help him stay alive by helping him do the above things!. Do you cook dinner!? take the advice the nutritionist gives you!. otherwise, learn to cook -- for you and Dad!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
