Answers:
Please tell your wife's doctor and he will probably adjust the dose of thyroxine!. Thyroxine, when given at the correct dose, should relieve the symptoms of hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid), AND have no side effects!.

Thyroxine (T4), contrary to what some posters think, is actually a normal hormone found in our bodies, produced by the thyroid gland!. Itself is not "synthetic" or "harmful" or whatsoever, but in fact very important in our well-being and hormonal balance!. Its active form is triiodothyronine (T3), and I have never heard that 85% of people cannot convert T4 into T3, because then 85% of the population will be hypothyroid!. Our thyroid glands produce mostly T4 and convert it into T3 for use!.

There will be problems when we have too little or too much thyroid hormones!. In hypothyroidism, usually both T4 and T3 are reduced!. However since T4 can be converted into T3, and replacing T4 is easier than T3 (more predictable uptake and action), usually just thyroxine replacement is needed!.

Your wife's symptoms of rapid heart rate and hot flushes are known to be caused by too much thyroxine!. This is a common side-effect in those on thyroxine replacement therapy!. This can be effectively managed by correct adjustment of the dose by the doctor - do not change the medication or dosage without the doctor knowing, because different tablets may have different dosage and absorption rate, and your wife may suffer from low or high thyroxine unnessarily!.

Different formulations of thyroxine should have no or not much difference; most, such as levothyroxine, are "synthetic" thyroxine with slight chemical changes so that they are more stable in the body / better absorbed by the body / etc!. and are not particularly "better" or "worse"!. It depends on your wife's situation and the choice of your doctor!.

Just for completion's sake, I also looked up the "Armour Thyroid"!. It is made from dried pig thyroid gland grinded into powder form!. I looked up its company website - surprise, surpise!. It contains levothyroxine and L-triiodothyronine!. It claims to be better because it is "natural", and contains both T4 and T3!. There is no clinical trial so far proving it to be more effective than the synthetic levothyroxine, except maybe with some placebo effect!.

Before synthetic thyroxine became available, the mainstay of treatment for hypothyroidism was in fact grinded pig thyroid - Hmm, I wonder why did we change to the synthetic one if it's so bad!.

And everyone, please do not be fooled by the "natural = good, synthetic = bad" misconception!. A huge number of poisons are natural, you know!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I did much better on raw, dessicated, bovine thyroid---from a nutritionist!.
Levothyroxine / synthroid is also known as T-4!. There are several thyroid hormones, & T-4 must be broken down into the other 'T's for the body to have the proper balance!. My Dr!. only checked for T-4 levels & assumed everything was OK just because I had enough T-4!. However, he also had me on medication that interefered with my thyroid function, & I wound up dropping out of school, because my brain shut down, & no one would believe me! I had long-term memory, & aced a test with that, *without even recognizing that I got one answer right*! I couldn't recognize new info, & how it went together---not even the beginning & the end of a simple sentence, about my easiest subject! (I'd just moved from an advanced school, to a public one, & had memorized the info the year prior!.)

YES, use of T-4 is known for causing problems, & it's a wonder to me that it wasn't removed from the market decades ago!

"!. !. !. Synthetic levothyroxine may have adverse side effects like: palpitations, nervousness, headache, difficulty sleeping, insomnia, swelling of the legs and ankles, weight loss and/or increased appetite!. Allergies to the medicine are unlikely, but if the patient develops a severe reaction to this drug such as difficulty breathing, shortness of breath or swelling of the face and tongue it is imperative that the patient immediately seek medical attention !. !. !."

Levothyroxine is just the active levo-isomer, as a physiological substance, at the correct dose it has no side effects!.

The trend for using 'natural' thyroxine persists in the USA but is effectively banned in the UK!. The problem is that the potency of this varies between batches!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
