Answers:

hi hunny, I am a female crohnie dxed at age 12. I've had it for 27 yrs. and it's a pain in the butt. (no pun intended).

I have to watch what I eat and drink and I take medications to keep things in check but I still get pain and spasms in my stomach.

Do you belong to the local Crohns & Colitis Foundation of America chapter where you live? I belong to the one where I live and have met so many like myself it's amazing. We are having our 10th annual Guts & Glory walk this yr. to raise awareness about IBD (Crohns/Colitis) and funds to find a cure. Our national headquarters are in NYC and they have been doing these walks for for a while & so far, it's been successful in raising money.

National also has a hotline manned by professionals who are very familiar with IBDwhere you can call M-F ( am - 5 pm 9 (EST) where you can ask questions. 888.MY.GUT.PAIN (888-694-8872).

Colonic irrigations, coffee enemas, etc. are dangerous for ppl like us because it can cause serious electrolyte imbalance as well as other problems so avoid them at all costs. People who encourage this type of treatment have no idea what the disease is or how it affects us plus from what I've learned at the CCFA meetings, there are so many scams out there that say they are "cures" when in reality it only hurts our pocket books. Your best bet to get truthful information is from your doctors, the CCFA, and people who actually have Crohns.

I wish you the best of health and a pain free summer. :)

PS: for pain, I usually do a heating pad on my stomach 15 minutes on, 20 minutes off and at bed time I use the Thermacare wrap for my back but I move the heat disks to the front. That way I can sleep for 8 hrs.. I also have pain medication from my MD as well as an antispasmatic and a muscle relaxer. If you are really sore, ask for pain meds but if you are to the point of lying in the fetal position in the bathroom, head to the ER and have them give you something via IV for pain. (been there many times). you don't have to live in severe pain..there is relief. If you GI refuses to give you relief, tell him that you'll find someone who will help you. You have the right to hire and fire a doctor at any time plus the right for a 2nd opinion. (been there, done that too)
