Hypoechoic mass within left parotid gland on ultrasound, should I be worried?!

Question: Hypoechoic mass within left parotid gland on ultrasound, should I be worried!?
I felt a lump on my left cheek area, had an ultrasound and it said this was the report:

"Small hypoechoic mass within the left parotid gland!. This could represent a cyst or intraparotid lymph node!."

Then it said: "follow up is recommended"!. The doctor just showed me the report and said: "Okay"!. And that it is just a cyst!. But why would a cyst suddenly develop!? Should I be worried!? The doctor didn't even mention any kind of follow up, only that if it gets big again to come back!.

I'm worried!. Help!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I wont question the radiologist's report because I cant see it but usually a cyst(filled with fluid) and a lymph node(solid) would look different on ultrasound!. the good news is either condition is likely benign!. However, you should let your doctor know if you didn't understand fully what he thinks it is or whether he thinks it is significant!. Don't be afraid to press him for details!. And radiologists almost always say 'follow up recommended'!. that's just legal butt-covering on their part!.

I'm not a medical expert of any kind, but it sounds to me like the ultrasound report said that it could have been a cyst or something wrong with the lymph node, and the conclusion was that it was just a cyst!. From your doctor telling you it was just a cyst, it sounds like you have nothing to worry about!. The portion on the report that says "follow up recommended" probably means to follow up with your doctor, which you did by talking to the doctor, and your doctor told you to come back if it gets big again!. ("Follow up" is medical lingo for a return visit!. For instance, if you go to a neurologist for the first time, then you go back for a second visit, that second visit is called a "follow up"!.)

I don't know why cysts form- many women get cysts on their ovaries that come and go at certain points during their menstrual cycles!.

Just do what your doctor says- keep an eye on it, and call if it gets big again!. And don't worry! You'll be fine!. =)
